Deze tentoonstelling kwam tot stand op initiatief van de Academische Overheid van de K.U. Leuven. Ter gelegenheid van de vierhonderdvijftigste verjaring van Erasmus overlijden leek het gepast op een of andere manier de aandacht van een breder publiek te vestigen op een der grootste figuren die ooit in het Leuvens universitair milieu is werkzaam geweest. Deze verjaring valt bovendien samen met het opzetten van een samenwerkingsverband onder de Europese universiteiten waarin Leuven een rol wenst te spelen en waaraan Erasmus naam werd verbonden. Een zinvolle associatie, want, zoals verder in deze publicatie zal blijken, Erasmus schrijven en drijven heeft een onmisbare impuls gegeven aan de opbouw op Europees vlak van een werkelijk internationale cultuur die de middeleeuwse gedachtenwereld moest aflossen. Talrijk zijn de Europese universiteiten waar Erasmus een tijdlang heeft gestudeerd of gewerkt, Parijs, Leuven, Cambridge, Turijn, ... en nog talrijker die universiteiten waar hij vrienden, bewonderaars of tegenstanders vond.

Rudolph Agricola: Six Lives and Erasmus's Testimonies The Frisian humanist Rudolph Agricola (1443-1485) is rightly famous for single-handedly bringing the Italian Renaissance to the North. Owing to his fascinating personality and many talents, he attracted the love and admiration of his contemporaries and the following generations. As a result, six biographies on Agricola have been preserved. The authors of these lives drew their materials from different sources and wrote their texts independently from each other. Differing vastly in rhetorical aims and methods, they provide us with a vivid image of cultural and intellectual life in the 15th century. Erasmus praised Agricola's work throughout his writings. No less than fifty testimonies from Erasmus and his correspondents are presented here. This edition of sources supplements the volume of Agricola's letters (BLN, 2002) and is preceded by an expert survey of all biographical information now at our disposal. Thus it fills a gap in our knowledge of a great man of letters, while correcting a number of persistent misconceptions (concerning the year of Agricola's birth, for instance).

Humaniste célèbre de la Renaissance italienne, auteur d'un De pictura et d'un De re aedificatoria devenus des ouvrages de référence de l'histoire des arts, mathématicien et géomètre accompli, témoin et partie prenante des débats sur la perspective et la vision naturelle, Alberti est aussi l'auteur d'un De statua. Depuis 1869, date de l'unique et peu fidèle traduction française de l'ouvrage, ce texte important, ici présenté dans une édition critique bilingue, était resté inédit — tout comme La Vie d'Alberti par lui-même que nous publions pour la première fois, avec quelques lettres. Au fil du volume, le portrait de l'un des artistes et des penseurs illustres de la Renaissance selon Vasari, homme universel que Burckhardt considérait comme une figure exemplaire des grandes individualités de l'histoire de l'Occident, se fait plus précis et plus attachant. Le De statua, entre statuaire antique et sculpture moderne, texte théorique et technique à la fois, deviendra un élément décisif des réflexions actuelles sur la sculpture, sa définition et ses fonctions.
